Bill attacks ice with paddle 2007 was an interesting year - "interesting" as used in the Chinese curse, "May you lead an interesting life.", with its ice storm and flooding. Our quarter-mile long driveway was blocked with numerous fallen trees and branches. More trees were in danger of losing limbs or worse, so we set about to knock off as much of the ice as we could. (Tip: Do not use expensive hardwood canoe paddles for this, use the twenty dollar Walmart ones - a lesson I learned from experience!)It took a full day to clear the driveway, but the downed powerlines throughout the community, would take crews from several states a full two weeks to repair. We drove into Stigler on day two and bought one of the last generators to be found. If you have a well, it is a good idea to keep at least five or ten gallons of water on hand in case of electrical outage. Generators often don't have enough power to run the well, lights, computers and television, etc. The first night we were without power, we used our propane lanterns for light and were thankful that our stove and heater run on propane instead of electricity. Now if they'd just come up with propane televisions!
