Save Our Water has apparently bought into the line being fed to us by politicians and the Board of Tourism, and led to thinking that a sixty day extension on closure of Eufaula's Fountainhead Golf Course, and the subsequent gifting of the course to the Creek Nation is a good thing for Eufaula. Their latest newsletter heralds all this as "Good News!". SOW has obviously not read our previous articles regarding the Fountainhead Fiasco, so let's note a few things for them here - - The taxpayers of Oklahoma built this course, which until it was allowed to lapse into disrepair was the most profitable golf course run by the state.
- The Department of Tourism was obviously negligent in allowing the course to go into disrepair, yet no action is being taken against them or even to keep such actions from re-occuring.
- Once Creek Nation accepts the course, no further revenue from it will ever again flow into the state's coffers. (Especially since a bill has been authored by an Oklahoma senator to enable the land to be deeded to Creek Nation).
- Creek Nation has stated they want to make this into a "Championship" golf course - which will price fees beyond the comfort zone of the casual Eufaula golfer.
- Creek Nation has stated they want to make this a part of their gambling mecca which will include a marina, hotels, shopping and the golf course. Can you see any way that their tourists will need to venture into town to spend money? (I can't) Therefore the net result to locals is likely to be little more than a few dish-washing and gardner jobs.
How is it right to allow taxpayer assets to erode to the degree that they can claim the course is now worthless and should be given away? Why aren't heads rolling? How is it right to take from the taxpayers and give to Creek Nation with the taxpayers getting nothing in return? How is it right for Eufaula to lose an asset that has brought residents and business to their area to an entity that will use it to lure tourists to a gambling mecca that will do little to benefit Eufaula? Why haven't our local politicians drawn up a petition for us to sign, demanding an inquiry? (Click for more articles on this issue)
